Journalist injured in attack

KARACHI, February 28, 2006: A journalist was wounded seriously after a group of land-grabbers attacked him in Sohrab Goth police jurisdiction on Sunday February 26 night.

Khalid Panhwar, a newsman associated with a Sindhi-language newspaper, was on his way back after visiting his plot in the locality when the land-grabbers attacked him. He suffered injuries on his mouth and dislocation of two teeth.

The journalist was rushed to a hospital where he was admitted for treatment. Panhwar told The News: “My father had purchased two plots in Allahabad Goth, which were grabbed by some people having links with influential persons and support of area police.”

He said complaints about the land grab had been submitted several times to the police and administration but for reasons best known to police no action was taken against the culprits. “Had police taken cognizance on the first complaint instead of supporting the land-grabbers, they would not have been able to attack me,” Panhwar deplored.

He appealed to senior police officers to take notice of policemen who have been patronizing the land grabbers. The office-bearers of Karachi Press Club and Karachi Union of Journalists have expressed concern over the incident and demanded that the matter be resolved according to law.
