Journalist granted bail

SAHIWAL, Oct 13: The additional district and sessions judge on Monday granted pre-arrest bail to Sahiwal Press Club general secretary Syed Raghib Ali. Judge Syed Maroof Ahmed Ali also directed the police to produce the record of the case on Oct 18.

Grain Market police had on Saturday night registered a case against Raghib Ali on the charge of firing and attempt to murder. Some men had resorted to aerial firing, allegedly under police protection, to get a hunger strike camp removed from the Sahiwal Press Club, set up by local journalists to protest the registration of a false case against the club secretary-general.

The Sahiwal Press Club had alleged in a complaint lodged with the governor and the chief minister that corruption was rampant in the office of DPO Saeed Ahmed Lodhi, who was allegedly patronizing a ‘group of touts’ among journalists.

An inquiry was initiated and the statements of press club members recorded by an officer of the rank of DSP. The DPO ‘vengefully got arrested’ Saqib Ali, who was taken to the Fateh Sher police station where a case of burglary was registered against him before the raid of a bailiff.
