Journalist arrested, beaten up

SHIKARPUR: A senior journalist was booked for defamation and charge-sheeted in the court of IVth additional sessions judge of Shikarpur here on Wednesday.

He was arrested in a case registered by a SHO against him on Tuesday.

The court sent him to the Civil Hospital of Shikarpur for medical examination and treatment after arrested journalist Abdul Razzaq Brohi told the judge that police had tortured him.

Humayoon police on the complaint of SHO of Bachal Bhayo police station Abdul Sattar Bhayo had registered an FIR against Razzaq who works for a Sindhi news paper and TV channel.

The SHO alleged that the reporter was involved in publication of a news item against the complainant, which had shocked his mother who died due to cardiac arrest after hearing the news published against him.

The SHO filed an application in the Court of Sessions and District Judge of Shikarpur, requesting the court to direct the Humayoon police to lodge an FIR against the reporter.

On the court order, an FIR was registered and the reporter arrested. The court remanded him for five days and ordered police to send him to the Civil Hospital for a medical check-up and treatment.

Adviser to Sindh Chief Minister Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh, political and religious leaders and journalists condemned arrest of the journalist.

They demanded immediate release of the journalist and transfer of DPO Younus Chandio.
