JI slates newsmen manhandling

RELIGIOUS leaders have strongly condemned the police torture and victimisation of two senior journalists, namely Mahboob Hiraj, edition incharge of The News and the News on Sunday reporter Aoun Sahi, terming it a reflection of rulersí dictatorial policies to suppress the freedom of media. They have also demanded immediate retribution against the police officers involved in the incidents.

A spokesman for MMA president and Jamaat-e-Islami amir Qazi Hussain Ahmad on Saturday said police highhandedness was a part of Musharraf regime to victimise journalists and lawyers as they were raising voice against it. He said Qazi Hussain Ahmad had expressed heartfelt sympathies for the victim journalists, who were subjected to physical torture and harassment in the police stations by different cops, besides lodging false cases against them. Qazi Hussain Ahmad demanded an immediate action against the policemen involved, he added.

The spokesman said the APDM was already engaged in a struggle for the rule of constitution and law and restoration of deposed judiciary in the country. Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (JUP) information secretary Ali Haider Noor Khan Niazi also demanded a strict action.
