JI releases white paper on govt’s anti-media policies

ISLAMABAD: The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) on Saturday released a white paper according to which at least 200 journalists belonging to electronic and print media were targeted and victimised for presenting truth before the masses through their writings and programmes in the last three years.

“The corrupt mafia, bhatta mafia and looters of national exchequer do not like the media to expose their misdeeds. The last three years have been very difficult for the electronic and print media of Pakistan,” the white paper said.

Releasing the white paper, the JI secretary general Liaquat Baloch said a number of journalists, including Wali Khan Babar, were killed in the target killing incidents. “Only in the year 2009, around 90 media persons were kidnapped and a dozen were killed,” he said.

The JI leader said Umar Cheema was kidnapped and subjected to brutal torture and crime reporter Shakeel Anjum’s house was attacked in which his child was injured while three fake murder cases were also registered against him.

Moreover, the white paper said, senior journalist Hafiz Tahir Khalil, who is active in profession of journalism for the over three decades, was manhandled by some officials after press conference of Pemra chairman.

Similarly, the paper said that the house of Aizaz Syed was attacked. Dr Aamir Wakil and a crime reporter were killed while Hafiz Imran was tortured for doing extensive coverage of brutal killing of two real brothers in Sialkot.

“The television channels have been facing closures while senior journalists continued to receive life threat and bundles of newspapers being carried by vehicles were also burnt,” the paper mentioned.

The white paper said that senior journalists have been facing harassment and threats.
