ISLAMABAD: The 21st century is known as an age of technology and one of the most important types of new technology is the social media.

Recognising its importance, the Islamabad police have decided to use social media as a communication tool for disseminating the information to public and getting recommendations from them to further improve policing affairs.

The decision to this effect was made at a meeting of Inspector General of Police Sikandar Hayat with the members of the Central Coordination Committee, including Islamabad High Court Bar Association President Haroonur Rasheed, Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Shaban Khalid, social activist Samar Minnallah, Asad Ansari and Dr Pervaiz Ahsan.

According to a source, the participants agreed that social media had become an important tool for policing and it was decided to open new accounts of Islamabad police on social media. It was decided that Islamabad police would open its own Twitter account and Facebook page to be created to brief the civil society on important incidents.

For better image of police in young generation, the source said it was decided that schoolchildren would be invited at police stations to present them a softer image of the police.

People friendly policing was focused in the meeting and it was decided to highlight important cases through involvement of the civil society.

It was agreed to improve policing affairs, especially ensuring friendly atmosphere for complainants and eliminating the typical ‘thana culture’ from police stations in Islamabad.

Close liaison with the media was stressed and it was agreed to ensure media cooperation in highlighting important issues.

The participants decided to take up traffic-related issues in the meeting of traffic committee, and that traffic education programmes as well as other programmes related to enforcement of traffic rules would be started.

It was decided to award good police officers and best committee on a monthly basis for their encouragement.
