‘Irresponsible’ electronic media

MOHAMMAD KHAN SIAL

KARACHI: There is a long history of struggle for the freedom of press and what the media achieved today, it was direct result of the untiring struggle of media members and the people of Pakistan, but it appears that freedom of expression does not suit some quarters.

To apprise myself of the current affairs, I usually use internet and read newspapers. However, on September 26, I briefly watched a TV programme in view of changing situation in the country. In the programme, the anchorperson claimed that he possessed a file of the family members of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani about their stay at London and Pakistan.

He also repeatedly taunted the PM for visiting ‘Sunday Bazaar’ and for his other activities. What the comment used was highly objectionable language against the PM and his family members, which does not conform to journalistic norms. Although, I consider myself a strong believer in freedom of expression and without having any political association, I am deeply concerned about the irresponsible attitude of some media professionals.
