International HR Day today
KARACHI: The International Poverty and Human Rights Day is being observed on December 10 (today). The day marks the anniversary of the UN General Assembly’s adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.As part of the World Programme for Human Rights Education from 2005-2007, this year is devoted to human rights education in primary and secondary school systems. Objectives of the programme include increasing the level of public awareness and understanding of human rights education and training at the country level, which is deemed essential for harmonious relations among communities and for fostering mutual understanding, tolerance and peace. As stated in Article 26.2 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace.”
