Huawei Technologies, Ufone sign contract

ISLAMABAD (September 27 2006): The mobile technology is expanding at a very fast pace and at present there are about 40 million cell phones subscribers in Pakistan, said Minister for Information Technology Awais Ahmad Khan Laghari on Tuesday. He was addressing a seminar as chief guest on “Celebration of U-fone Network Expansion & Roll-Out 2006-07”. A contract signing ceremony took place between Huawei Technologies and U-fone (PTML). Huawei Technologies is a leading Chinese next generation telecommunications network company, which has entered into a contractual bond with U-fone (PTML).

This $550 million initiative has been taken to expand the services of U-fone to additional 1500 more destinations, focusing on the rural areas. Awais Laghari lauded the efforts of Ufone and hoped that the new commitment of Huawei and Ufone would deliver best results. He urged the mobile operators to maintain international standards in providing smooth connectivity and after sales services to the customers. Claiming it as one of the biggest contract of the region, he said this would revolutionise the telecommunication sector of the country and wished both the companies success in executing the project. Baber Khan Chief Executive Officer, Ufone stated this contractual binding as the biggest in the region and said perhaps it is the biggest in the world. He praised the efforts of Etisalat PTML who is taking keen interest in expanding the telecommunication industry and investing large amount in Pakistan.
