HRCP demands high-level inquiry

Karachi:The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) expressed profound grief and grave concern over the tragic and brutal target killing of Advocate Raja Riaz near the Sindh High Court building on Monday and termed it an attack on the independence of the judiciary.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Zohra Yusuf, Vice-Chairperson, HRCP, condemned the attack terming the incident a “clear attempt to suppress and undermine the process of justice.”

“Obviously the State has failed in its primary duty of protecting the lives of citizens, particularly of those who are vulnerable to violence because of their profession. The fact that in some cases the State and its agencies are directly involved in threatening the lawyers recently is all the more reprehensible,” she said, adding that this alarming trend is the product of the present climate of intolerance of dissent and lack of respect for the rule of law and independence of the judiciary.

The HRCP has strongly demanded an unimpeded investigation into this tragic incident and has urged the Government of Sindh to order a high-level inquiry into the case. The HRCP also offers sincerest condolences to the family and colleagues of Riaz on his death while performing his professional duties.
