Honour killings continue unchecked

KHAIRPUR, May 16 2006: The savage tribal custom of Karo-Kari continues to devour lives in the interior of Sindh. In one such gory incident four members of a family were slain on May 15 in the village of Samano Kharous in the precincts of Shah police station.

The quadruple murder left the villagers frightened and aghast. Reportedly, Paryal Kharous and his accomplices allegedly made their way into the house of Nibhao Kharous and opened random fire on the sleeping family, killing Waziran, her eight-year-old son, Muhammad Hassan, her nieces Bakhtiar and Ghulam Rasool Kharous, on the spot. Another two family members – Jameela and Rajib – sustained injuries.

Hundreds of irate villagers took the bodies to a hospital for post-mortem examination. A few months ago the suspected killer had accused Waziran and a youth, Fareed Hussain, of having illicit relations. Although a private Jirga had declared the woman innocent, but the accused – the step brother of Waziran’s spouse – allegedly disagreed and refused to accept the Jirga’s decision. Neither any case was registered till the filing of this report nor any arrests made.
