Honour killing in Chitral

CHITRAL,March 29,2005: The death of a woman in a Chitral village on March 24 was reportedly an honour killing and not suicide as claimed by her husband.

This came to light Monday when the deceased Usmania’s father Ibadur Rahman reached Chitral town from his village Bakamak along with a number of villagers to lodge report against his son-in-law Sharif Azam for murdering his daughter. The First Information Report (FIR) under section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code was lodged in the police station Chitral.

The deceased’s brother Shahidur Rahman, the Lutkoh area nazim Shirin Khan, elite of the area and relations of the family later told a news conference that it was a case of honour killing and the killer Sharif Azam must be given exemplary punishment. They asserted that Ms Usmania was a college graduate and could never think of suicide. They narrated that the wife of her husband’s brother had sent an audiocassette to Sharif Azam in Saudi Arabia to inform him that Ms Usmania had an immoral character.

They alleged that Sharif Azam upon his return from abroad murdered his wife and later claimed that she had committed suicide.
