Homes planned for women in distress

HYDERABAD, Aug 19: Sindh Minister for Women Development Tauqeer Fatima Bhutto has said that the government is planning to set up homes in each district to provide safe accommodation to women in distress.

Talking to journalists at the Circuit House, the minister said the government was committed to reserving 10 per cent quota in jobs for women.

She said the government was considering to frame new laws and implement the existing ones to protect women’s rights but it could not succeed in its endeavours without active support of the civil society.

She urged people to cooperate with the government and said that her ministry had launched a vigorous campaign for the empowerment of women.

About Pervez Musharraf’s resignation, she said that finally the long and dark night of dictatorship had come to an end and recalled the contributions made by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto.

She regretted that the dictators had always reversed the achievements of civilian governments. The resignation had proved beyond any shadow of doubt that the charge-sheet prepared by the coalition partners against Musharraf was based on solid evidence, she remarked.

She said that the credit for Musharraf’s resignation went to Benazir Bhutto who had launched a relentless struggle against the dictator and laid down tremendous sacrifices to lead democracy to its final victory.
