Harassing a journalist

It was horrifying to read that the house of an investigative reporter was attacked allegedly by the sleuths of a spy agency.

This reminded me of the era of former dictator Ziaul Haq when journalists were flogged and incarcerated for speaking against violations of human rights. According to the press release of the news organisation concerned, the investigative reporter was working on a story involving the agency accused of being behind the attack.

This attack was not on an individual journalist — it was actually an assault on the freedom of the press. It would be better if our secret agencies focused on matters concerning the sovereignty and integrity of our country, rather than terrorising the people working for the betterment of our society. The media is now independent enough and cannot be suppressed by such cowardly actions.

I condemn the harassment of a noted journalist by unidentified men on January 19 in Islamabad. Thank God, the three attackers did not cause any physical harm to him and his family, and left only after hurling stones inside his house and damaging his car. The authorities must probe the incident and make the results public.
