Hamid Mir given lifetime achievement award
LAHORE: The annual reunion of the Old Ravians was held at the Government College University’s Oval Ground on Saturday night.
Former prime minister and Old Ravian Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali was the chief guest at the grand event which was also marked by a music concert and a lifetime achievement award to eminent journalist and Old Ravian Hamid Mir.
Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique and a large bureaucrats, politicians, artists and academicians also attended the reunion dinner.
In his inaugural address, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah said the Old Ravians without any doubt were the strength who helped GCU in advancing the university’s vision and mission. He said a university required multi-billion rupees investment for new buildings, laboratories, classrooms, equipment etc, therefore, it was essential that both the government funding and fundraising by Old Ravians Union must continue. He said the GCU had this year allocated one billion rupees from the government for its new 400-acre campus at Kala Shah Kaku.
Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, who remained the captain of Government College, Lahore’s hockey team, shared his memories of studying at the Government College.
He said his biggest pride in life was the roll of honour in hockey from the Government College.
Old Ravians Union President Kazi Afaq Hossain said the union every year awarded lifetime achievement awards to eminent Old Ravians. And, this year the union’s executive committee decided to give away this award to Hamid Mir for his contributions to the freedom of press, democracy and his alma mater. Last year, this award was given to the late noted write Bano Qudsia. The historical Gothic Style building of GCU was also illuminated for the reunion celebrations.
