Hafeez announces Rs10m grant for KPC

KARACHI: Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh on Saturday announced a grant of Rs10 million for providing facilities to the members of the Karachi Press Club (KPC).

Speaking at the KPC, he said that its members deserved more than this amount, but due to the ongoing austerity drive in the country, it was the maximum that could be done at present. “This amount would be enhanced as the situation improves next year,” he added.

The finance minister also announced the launch of the “Sabihuddin Ghausi Award” for journalists in recognition of the services the late journalist rendered for the free press. He said that the initial prize money for the award would be Rs0.1 million, which would be raised in times to come.

Paying rich tributes to late Ghausi for his candid reporting, Shaikh said, “He was the kind of person whom we respect as a duty.”

“His reporting might have always created problems for me as a minister, but at the same time guided me in improving the financial affairs,” he noted.
