Group Insurance Scheme for journalists: CPNE president to meet investors to arrange finances

KARACHI: Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) President Khushnood Ali Khan has said that he will be visiting Dubai to meet investors with a view to arranging finances for the Group Insurance Scheme for journalists.

Addressing a seminar on “security needs of journalists and the media” at Karachi Press Club on Monday, he said a well-planned security system would be introduced for journalists, writers and different print media institutions.

He said the support would be extended to their entire families after verification from the representatives of KPC, CPNE and All Pakistan Newspaper Society (APNS). To a question, he said some serious differences between the concerned parties were an impediment towards the announcement of 7th Wage Board Award. According to him, there are many newspapers, which are not in a financial position to pay journalists in accordance with the wage award.

Speaking on the occasion, Ikram Sehgal, Chairman of Security and Defence Committee of CPNE said the council had launched a countrywide mobile phone service with a short code for journalists to approach the committee for any possible timely assistance. He said the teams of CPNE’s security and defence committee would be visiting all the press clubs in the country and would be briefing the journalists about different security measures. “The committee has decided to provide basic training to the security guards deputed outside the press clubs for better protection,” he added.

Aamer Mehmood, Secretary General of CPNE, said war on terror had created new challenges for the journalists and the country at large. Dr Jabbar Khattak, General Secretary APNS, KPC President Imtiaz Khan Faran, Vice President Aamir Latif and members of club’s governing body were also present.
