Govt urged not to wind up local bodies system

Tando Muhammad Khan: The real beauty of democracy is to devolve powers to grassroots and the local bodies system is a clear example of it.

These views were expressed by MPA Akram Adil, speaking at a workshop titled Local Bodies System under the aegis of Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) at Tando Muhammad Khan Press Club on Thursday.

He said end to local bodies system would be tantamount to snatching power from general people and leaving them at the mercy of bureaucracy. However, some flaws of this system could be removed with necessary amendments, he added.

PPP District Senior Vice President Syed Ajaz Nabi Shah said record corruption has been done in present district government system. He said the system could be continued only by making it effective.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Provincial Vice President Pir Asadullah Jan Sarhandi said the success of any system lies in its leadership. The people want to keep the system there with some improvements. He said it is amusing that a democratic government is bent to weaken this system.

District Naib Nazim Pir Ishfaq Jan Sarhandi said there is a need to transfer power from district nazim to UC level.

Muslim League Quaid Provincial Vice President Saood Ahmed Farooqi, PPF Coordinator Muqtada Mansoor, Musawir Shahid and Wasi Qureshi also spoke.
