Govt believes in absolute media freedom: Governor Punjab

LAHORE: Governor Salmaan Taseer said on Tuesday that the peopleÂ’s government believes in absolute media freedom.

He was talking to students of Media Studies Department, Islamia University, Bahawalpur at Governor’s House. He said, “Our media should adopt self censorship so that the government need not impose any curbs on them. It is the mediaÂ’s responsibility to protect our cultural traditions and national interests.”

He said 31 news channels were operating in the country with full freedom. He said the government was promoting mass communication studies in universities. Taseer said, “In all public universities media students should do a two-month internship after their final exams. They must be given additional marks for this.”

He said the media should adopt international standards in this age of competition. He said, “People across the world not only watch our news channels, but they are also interested in our entertainment channels.”
