Good show of solidarity

The Pakistan Broadcasters’ Association’s (PBA) decision to frame an agenda to protect TV channels from government pressure is a commendable one. It is the primary responsibility of the media to keep the masses informed. Similarly, it’s the people’s right to know the truth. As elections are near, it is feared that the rulers may try to prevent the channels from airing correct information with regard to the election situation.
If the government tries to pressurise channels by giving them ‘advice’ on how to telecast certain information, all channels should collectively shut down their transmission to protest against such unfair practices. The PBA has a good opportunity to set an example of solidarity.
