‘Go-Gilani-go’ rally lays hand on mediamen

KARACHI – The Nawaz-League’s Sunday anti-government rally, “go-Gilani-go”, was utterly disorganised; not only did PML-N workers resort to vandalism, they also went violent, leaving a number of journalists wounded, some of them fatally, including a Waqt News television’s cameraman.

The media boycotted the rally over the PML-N workers’ torture on a group of journalists in front of Ghous Ali Shah and other PML-N leaders Saleem Zia, Mushahidullah, Marvi Memon and Nehal Hashmi. One of the hands of Mohammad Danish, Waqt News television’s cameraman, was badly hurt.

The PML-N, in its maiden rally against the PPP-led government in Karachi, pressured Yousuf Raza Gilani to step down as the country’s premier having being convicted in a contempt case by the apex court. The party leaders said while the PPP-led government was violating the judiciary’s orders, the PML-N was struggling for the rule of law in the country. They vowed that their party would not allow the government to succeed in setting in motion a clash between the state institutions. “The judiciary was made independent and its orders would also be got implemented by the PML-N’s efforts,” they asserted in their addresses to the rally outside the Press Club. “We would continue our campaign until the end of this corrupt regime of (President) Zardari,” averred the PML-N leaders.
