Freedom of Information Act draft not yet finalised

ISLAMABAD- A spokesman for the Ministry of Information and Media Development denied that the Government had finalized the draft of the freedom of information act.

In a statement here, the spokesman denied the allegations contained in a APNS press release that the government had unilaterally finalized the draft of the freedom of information act without taking APNS and CPNE into confidence.

The spokesman clarified that neither the draft has been finalized yet by the Ministry of Information nor has a decision been taken to promulgate the ordinance in the form of the draft that was circulated. He explained that the Ministry had compiled the comments and views of a cross section of the society including the views of APNS and CPNE.

“The Government considers the press as a major stake-holder and beneficiary of the proposed freedom of information act and would not like to promulgate the ordinance without consulting the representatives of CPNE and APNS,” the spokesman said.

The concern expressed in the APNS press release was, therefore, premature and misplaced, he observed.
