Freedom of Information Act discussed

Karachi: A training programme to promote awareness about the Freedom of Information (FOI) act and its implications on transparent governance and citizen empowerment was held here on Friday.

The programme, which was organised by the Shehri-CBE, has been initiated to inform the civil society and government stakeholders about the said act, along with its power, usage, benefits and ways to strengthen its legislation.

Representatives of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), Planning & Development Department and the Government of Sindh, participated in the program.

Farhan Anwar, a member of Shehri-CBE, highlighted the active role his organisation has played in facilitating good governance through advocating transparency in government functions and promoting the citizenry to adopt a pro-active role in protecting their fundamental rights.

Naeem Sadiq explained in detail the process of invoking the FOI Ordinance, the guidelines for making an FOI Application and the five steps for obtaining the information and records.

His presentation was followed by an interactive discussion in which the participants engaged with trainers to better understand their personal role and function with reference to their responsibilities as per the FOI Ordinance.

Shehri-CBE distributed a comprehensive ‘Toolkit’ among the participants.

The kit, titled ‘Your Right to Know’, documents the process of invoking the FOI Ordinance and all related details.
