France accelerates efforts to make Paris Climate Conference a success

ISLAMABAD: The French government has initiated diplomatic offensive to make Paris Climate Conference, the COP21, a real success in the wake of tragedy of November 13, and for the purpose French envoys across the world have established hectic contacts with their host governments to ensure their participation in it.

The summit will be held in Paris on November 30 where more than 100 heads of state and government would turn up to ponder on the noble cause of preserving the world climate. Well placed diplomatic sources told The News here Sunday that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has given his nod for participation in the summit. French Ambassador to Pakistan Ms Martine Dorance had a meeting with the prime minister twice during last one week; first when Nawaz visited French Embassy to offer his condolences over the Paris tragedy, and later she called on the premier in the PM House. The sources pointed out that on both occasions Ambassador Dorance reminded the premier about his participation in the COP21.

The sources said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has appointed Zahid Hamid as federal minister for Climate Changes in the meanwhile who is an expert on the subject. He has written 53 details papers regarding climate changes. He will also attend the COP21 and French envoy will have meeting with him today (Monday) to discuss the schedule and related details of the summit.

The French ambassador has said that the COP21 is the biggest diplomatic event ever hosted in France and it will not only still go ahead but will be a moment of hope and solidarity. A moment of hope because the future of the planet is at stake, and a moment of solidarity, too, because, there will undoubtedly be more than 100 heads of state and government who will come to Paris to attend it, she said.
