Female officials accuse PBC DG of harassment

By Dilshad Azeem

ISLAMABAD: Director General (DG) Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) Murtaza Solangi has been accused of harassment by female workers of his department, The News has learnt.

A number of ladies working in Radio Pakistan said they plan to knock the doors of the Supreme Court of Pakistan to get justice if the information minister sits silently. Several complaints against the DG had been filed but no action was taken, they said. The complaints against the DG were not filed in one day, a woman said, deploring that no action was taken by the concerned authorities.

The ladies, requesting not to be named, said that the court should take notice and inquire from the responsible person as to why no action was taken despite repeated complaints by them.

When contacted for his version, Murtaza Solangi said nobody from the information ministry had told him nor was he curious to know about the complaints and their nature. “Had someone handed over to me such complaints, I would have been in a position to speak.”

Asked as to why he was accused of harassment only by women, the DG Pakistan Radio said he was unable to say anything because of lack of knowledge about the contents of the complaints.

Information Minister Qamaruzzman Kaira, when approached for a comment, confirmed to have received complaints against the DG Radio but said that people in offices usually complained against others.

“It does not establish that an accused person is a criminal or has committed a crime as lodging of complaints is a routine matter not only in the government but also in the private sector.” The minister avoided responding in clear terms whether an inquiry was conducted or planned against the DG Radio.

When asked whether action was not being taken against Solangi because he was a close friend of President Zardari, Kaira said, “We keep an eye on what is happening in the subordinate departments.”
