Fauzia Wahab has no time for the media

ISLAMABAD: While political parties strive to facilitate accessibility for media workers, the PPP’s choice for the important office of information secretary appears to be at odds with that aim.

The leadership of the ruling party replaced journalist-turned-politician Sherry Rehman with Fauzia Wahab — who also claims she has a journalistic background. But the ‘overburdened’ Fauzia has developed a habit of treating the media rudely for reasons best known to her.

While a number of occasions can be cited to highlight her attitude towards the media, a conversation over the telephone with Daily Times would suffice in summing up the situation.

When contacted for her views on a meeting of the core group of her party, the PPP information secretary said, “I’ve just entered my house. You people dial my number whenever you feel like it.” The two sentences were followed by silence: she had hung up.

While another call was made to her landline and she was asked to calm down – being the information secretary of her party and being responsible for answering questions about her party — Fauzia only went on to adopt a ruder tone.

“I have no subordinates to respond to your questions… why don’t you ask the ministers who have been provided subordinate staff by the government?” she charged. The line went silent again: she had hung up.
