Family of ‘rape’ victim offered shelter in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is ready to offer residential facility in Peshawar to the family of an alleged gang rape victim, of Karak, if it feels insecure in its home district, provincial Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said on Thursday.

He was talking to reporters on the Sher Shah Suri Road near the Peshawar Press Club after meeting a group of people protesting over the killing of Alamzeb, brother of the alleged rape victim.

The minister said a five-member police team headed by a head constable had been tasked with providing security to the girl’s family. He further said the government had also taken an exception to the rally taken out by police in support of the accused, ASI Hakeem Shah, and against the judiciary, and directed DIG Idress Khan to name the culpable personnel for stern action.Earlier, activists of different NGOs held a demonstration on the Sher Shah Suri Road near the Peshawar Press Club against Alamzeb’s killing and for action against the killers and the accused in the rape case.

The minister said on the directives of Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti, an inquiry committee comprising commissioner Kohat and DIG (investigation) Kohat to be headed by home secretary Mohammad Azam Khan had already been announced and FIR had been registered on its report.

The minister said SHO Pir Mohsin Shah, sub-inspector Amir Khan and ASI Pir Hakeem Shah along with some civilians had been arrested, while one woman and a policeman named in the FIR were still at large.

He appreciated the Peshawar High Court for taking a suo moto notice of the case and said that it was combined duty of the courts and government to purge anti-state and anti-social elements from the society.

Mr Iftikhar said the accused in the Alamzeb murder case had been arrested and a new committee headed by DIG (investigation) Idress Khan had been formed for investigation. He said another inquiry committee led by SP Konhat Atteequllah Wazir was already working on the gang rape case.

Noted among participants were Idress Kamal, Maimona Noor, Asif Mehmood, Sherin Javaid, Saima Naz and Subhan Ali.
