Family accuses police of torturing infant to death

NAWABSHAH, May 29: Family members of the infant died due to alleged police torture during a raid at a village near Doulatpur have called upon the prime minister, chief minister Sindh and other concerned to direct police to register an FIR and arrest culprits.

Ghulam Qadir Dahiri told Dawn on Thursday that a team of Doulatpur police headed by SHO Javed Jalbani raided his house in Ambri Dahiri village on May 11 to arrest him as police claimed him of being wanted in many criminal cases.

He alleged that police stormed his house beat up his family including women and children during which his six-month-old grandson Amir died on the spot. He said police did not registered case neither took action.

An enquiry committee headed by the DSP headquarters, Prayo Khan Jamali visited his house to record statements while some people came and tore down all statements, he said. Later it was revealed that the report was in favour of police officials, he said.

The enquiry, he said, had been transferred to SP Investigation Nawabshah without any progress. He said that he was innocent and hiding due to police fear and told that his family was in miserable condition.

SP Investigation Altaf Leghari told Dawn that he was given the responsibility of enquiry by the District Police Officer a couple of days back and will proceed further.

DPO Nawabshah, Rukhsar Ahmed Khuhawar said police would surely register an FIR if complainant approached the police station and strict action will be taken against those found guilty.
