Electronic media told to avoid showing violent scenes

KARACHI, July 18 2006: Chairman, Pakistan Electronic Media Regularity Authority (Pemra), Iftikhar Rasheed on July 17 directed electronic media organisations to avoid showing violent scenes in their news bulletins and other programmes, as they cast negative impacts on society. He was talking to newsmen after meeting with Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) and CEOs of FM radio stations here at Pemra office. Duraid Quraishy of Hum TV, Arshad Zuberi of Aaj TV, Ghazanfar Ali of Indus TV, Haji Abdul Rauf of ARY, Aslam Qazi of KTN, Jameel Syed representative of PBA and others attended the meeting. Chairman Pemra advised the media organisations to put the interest of country first before any other consideration.

He feared that violent scenes being telecast on electronic media might increase trend of violence in society and panic citizens. Iftikhar Rasheed said that regulation of electronic media was Pemra’s chief responsibility but we have stressed on media organisations to carry out their self-regulation. He said that Pemra has observed some improvement in this regard, but still there is a lot of ground to cover.
