Doing good’

THIS is apropos of your editorial ‘Doing good’ (July 29), which appreciates and endorses the cause of Indian star Amir Khan’s new TV programme ‘Satyamev Jayte’ (truth alone prevails).

Here is a question that many minds would be pondering over: why are TV channels in our country lagging behind in televising such innovative programmes to spread social awareness among people?

Unlike other countries professing social conscience through their broadcasts, the Pakistani media scarcely launches any such programme to help boost social and moral values of the people.

Our TV channels offer a wide variety of daily serials and talk shows relating to political issues and discussions on the prevailing conditions of the country but, sadly, no talk show or serial is shown about burning social issues.

TV channels only tend to focus on political issues. Perhaps, this is why viewers switch to other English and Indian channels. The media should aim at providing informative and research-based academic programmes to groom young minds.

TV channels and celebrities should develop programmes that are creative, productive and innovative. Nevertheless, the media can play an effective role in changing the mindset of people if celebrities and those sitting at the helm use it for the purpose this change calls for.
