Dawn staffer identifies assailant

HYDERABAD: The Dawn staffer of Hyderabad has identified an assailant out of the two produced before the court during ‘identification parade’ on Tuesday.

Dawn’s staff correspondent, Mohammad Hussain Khan, identified one of the two assailants Ali Akbar Junejo after the Investigation Officer Cantonment Police Station Javed Munna produced the arrested SNF activists for identification. The Judicial Magistrate-XII remanded the accused Ali Akbar Junejo to jail custody for 12 days. Police freed the other suspect Ali Raza Bhutto.

It may be noted that the journalist was manhandled for offending the SNF Chief Mumtaz Bhutto by not giving in to his pressure tactics.

Demonstration in this regard continued when a large number of people from all walks of life joined the journalists by congregating outside the Hyderabad Press club to condemn the attack. Journalists raised slogans and demanded early arrest of the assailants.

Rallies were also taken out in Tando Allahyar, Nawabshah, Naushahro Feroze, Shikarpur, Badin, Mirpurkhas and Mithi wherein journalists renewed the pledge to uphold the freedom of press.

Activists of the STP, Awami Tehrik, Primary Teachers Association and Bheel Welfare Association participated in Mithi rally.

Hyderabad DPO Javed Alam Odho on Monday night visited Mr Khan in the hospital and assured of making every effort for nabbing the culprits.

Jeay Sindh Mahaz-J chairman Abdul Khaliq Junejo offered his party’s support and termed the attack a ‘dastardly act’ in a telephonic message.

Chairman, Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party, Dr Qadir Magsi visited the injured journalist and said that truth can’t be suppressed through violence in this era of media. He demanded immediate action against the perpetrators of the attack.

PPP MNA Nawab Abdul Ghani Talpur also visited the injured journalist in the hospital and condemned the attack on his life.

President, All Pakistan Akhbar Farosh Federation, Syed Afzaal Ahmed Shah and members issued a statement condemning the attack and demanded immediate arrest of the accused.
