Cricketers, schoolchildren protest against ban on Geo Super, Aag

Rahat Munir

RAWALPINDI: Local cricket teams and schoolchildren staged a protest demonstration in Rawalpindi on Tuesday against the closure of Geo Super and Aag channels.

The protesters carrying cricket bats and wickets chanted slogans against Pemra. On the occasion, Azhar Mir, Civil Society president, said on the directions of President Asif Ali Zardari, Pemra was carrying out vindictive action against Jang and Geo Group that was not appropriate for the democratic government.

He said Pervez Musharraf had shut down news channels for three months and voice was also raised against it. He said there was no difference between the current government and the dictator.

Azhar Mir said if President Zardari was not involved in vindictive action against Jang and Geo, those officers of Pemra should be expelled who were defaming the government.

He announced if the government did not restore Geo Super and Aag channels, sports teams of the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi would stage a sit-in outside the parliament. Sports teams and schoolchildren marched on Murree Road.
