CPNE seeks government intervention

ISLAMABAD- The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) has demanded of the government to take cognisance of the serious situation arising out of the armed attack against Umar Shami and other on the wee hours of April 19 in Islamabad and take legal action against the persons who have been designated in the First Information Report (FIR) duly registered by the police, says a press release.

This demand was made by the Rawalpindi and Islamabad members of the CPNE present at an emergent CPNE meeting to discuss the serious situation arising out the said incident.

Mujib-ur-Rehman Shami, President of the CPNE, explained in detail the history and nature of his business agreement with Sardar Khan Niazi for publishing daily Pakistan and assured the editors that he was ready to follow the arbitration award given by Hameed Haroon in letter and spirit so that the dispute between the two parties is amicably settled. He said that he would also honour the decisions of the courts and SECP in this regard.

Mr. Shami further assured the editors that he was willing to accept the verdict of any committee, which the CPNE may constitute to settle the issue between the two parties. But he said resorting to kalashnikovs by the other party was highly undesirable and most condemnable.

The editors present at the meeting after listening to Mujib-ur-Rehman Shami urged upon the Government to raise the level of ongoing investigation in the matter and appoint an officer of the level of Superintendent Police (SP) and bring the culprits to book immediately.

The CPNE also demanded of the Government to provide sufficient police security at the offices of daily Pakistan in Islamabad so that Mujib-ur-Rehman Shami, the Editor-in-chief of the newspaper, who is also the Chief Executive of the paper, could safely enter the premises and perform his editorial duties safely and without fear of any armed attack. Without such security being provided by the Government any untoward incident can happen exposing the life of Mujib-ur-Rehman Shami to any serious danger, the resolution added.

It was also decided at the meeting that a committee consisting of Hamid Mir, Editor, Daily Ausaf Tariq Warsi, Resident Editor, Daily Nawa-e-Waqt Ms. Ayesha Haroon, Resident Editor, Daily The Nation, Shaikh Iftikhar Adil, Chief Editor. Daily Assas with Zahid Malik, Editor-in -Chief, Pakistan Observer as convener, may be formed which should call on the concerned government functionaries to apprise them of the gravity of the situation arisen out of the incident.

The member of the CPNE present at the meeting includes: Rana Tahir, Resident Editor, Daily Jang, Hamid Mir, Editor, Daily Ausaf; Tariq Warsi, Resident Editor, Daily Nawa-e-Waqt; Ms. Ayesha Haroon, Resident Editor, Daily The Nation; Shaikh Iftikhar Adil, Chief Editor Daily Assas, Zahid Malik, Editor in Chief, Pakistan Observer, Altaf Hassan Qureshi, Editor Urdu Digest; Tahir Mughal, Executive Editor, Daily Al-Akhbar; Masood Shorish, Editor Weekly Chattan; and Adeeb Javedani, Editor, Moon Digest.
