CPNE expresses grief over Munir Shakir’s killing

KARACHI: Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) President Jameel Athar Qazi, Senior Vice-President Qazi Asad Abid, Secretary General Ilyas Shakir, Joint Secretary Javed Mehar Shamsi and Finance Secretary Mushtaq Ahmed Qureshi have expressed their grief and sorrow over the targeted killing of journalist Munir Ahmed Shakir in Khuzdar on Sunday.

Munir Ahmed Shakir associated with the local Balochi language television Subzbat, Waqt News, and Online, a wire service, was on his way home on a motorcycle when unknown gunmen opened fire, leaving him seriously injured. He was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

In a statement issued here on Monday, the CPNE office-bearers said that Munir Shakir was the third member of the Khuzdar Press Club who had fallen victim to targeted killing during the last three years. Those who had earlier fallen prey to terrorist acts including Faiz Sasoli and Muhammad Khan.

They said that the killers of the two have not been arrested so far. The CPNE office-bearers urged the Balochistan government to immediately arrest the killers of Munir Shakir and award them exemplary punishment. They also appealed to the federal and provincial governments to announced compensation for the family of Munir Shakir.
