CPNE condemns attack on editor

QUETTA, April 18,2005: (PPI) Vice President Council Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE) Siddiq Baloch has strongly condemned the attack on the offices of Daily Mashriq inflicting injuries to its Executive Editor Kamran Mumtaz.

In a statement here April 17 he deplored the ever increasing pressure on the print medium from various circles and groups, sizeable number of them exercising patronage of the Government, political parties and its student wings using questionable and impermissible tactics to bully the Press or undermine the Freedom of Expression.
CPNE Vice President called for tolerance by all concerned conceding the same right to their political opponents so that democratic values take roots in our traditional society.

At the same time, the print medium will have to demonstrate responsibility in doing justice to all and not to become a tool or an agent to any segment of our society ” Taking undue sides is the main cause of violence against the print medium, he added.

He also deplored the growing tendency to use the power tool of media in vilification campaign unjustifiably targetting the outstanding personalities of our traditional society in order to defend their illegitimate commercial interests at the cost of free of expression.

CPNE is committed to bridge this huge gap between the commercialism and rights of the indigenous society and also restore the confidence of the common people in the printed words safeguarding the legitimate interests of our traditional society, the government in power and also its political opponents in all circumstances.
