Contempt plea against Mukhtar Mai put off

MULTAN, March 16,2005: The Lahore High Court, Multan Bench, on Tuesday adjourned for an indefinite period the proceedings of a contempt of court application filed by a local lawyer against Mukhtar Mai and 13 right activists.

The applicant had alleged that the respondents had shown contempt of court by agitating against its ruling in the case. The division bench had acquitted on March 3 five of the six people, who were sentenced to death by a Dera Ghazi Khan Anti-Terrorism Court on Aug 31, 2002. It commuted the sixth convict’s capital punishment to life imprisonment.

The LHC ruling sparked protests by the civil society organizations while Mukhtar Mai also told a news conference in Islamabad that she was grieved over the acquittal of her perpetrators.
