Committee to Protect Journalism (CPJ) flays raid

ISLAMABAD- The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and Pakistani journalists based in the US have expressed concerned over the threatening posture adopted by the army raid on Daily Dawn offices in Karachi.

In a letter to Chief Executive General Musharraf, a CPJ spokesman said the committee was troubled by the ominous signals that the Pakistani press might be coming under threat. It urged the general to issue a public statement “reaffirming your professed commitment to respect media freedom.” In the absence of constitutional protections and democratic safeguards, journalists in Pakistan are particularly vulnerable to arbitrary abuses of state of power,” said the statement.

It expressed the hope that the military administration would not use its formidable powers to control the press, as previous military regimes had done.
