Code of conduct for polls

THE Election Commission has announced the new code of conduct for polls in accordance with a Supreme Court judgment limiting expenses and campaigning by candidates.

The notification shows that no candidate would exceed the election expenses limits of Rs1.5 million. This is a right step in right direction by the Election Commission, but story does not end here.

However, several steps need to be taken in this regard.

For instance, dual nationality holders also would be declared illegible for contesting elections. Other issue is of fake degrees.

The Election Commission must scrutinise all candidates before declaring them legible for election.

The Election Commission should also make mandatory for candidates to declare wealth.

One who found involved in criminal and anti-state activity must be declared illegible.

By implementing these suggestions the Election Commission can make election process clean and transparent, which is the wish of everyone.
