Children rescued from racketeers

LAHORE, March 18: The city police on Tuesday rescued 10 children from the custody of six racketeers and arrested four of them.

Kot Abdul Malik division SP Sohail Akhtar told Dawn that the police had information that some suspicious people, along with children, were living in a house at Kot Lakhpat. He said when a police team raided the house they recovered 10 children who revealed that they belonged to Karachi and six people — Asif, Hanif, Ismail, Tufail, Mubarak and Sohail — of the area had brought them to Lahore on the promise of providing them with job. However, they detained them here and forced them into pick-pocketing.

The children, aged between 13 and 18, have been sent to the Edhi Homes in Gulberg. They are: Imran, Ehsan, Amir, Shamim, Chand, Rabail, Abdul Rafique, Ibrahim, Younis, Munir and Shahabuddin.

An Edhi official told Dawn that the children would be reunited with their families soon.

The police claimed to have arrested Asif, Hanif, Ismail and Sohail while Mubarak and Tufail were absconding.
