Cellular companies’ representatives appear before NAB probe body: statements recorded

ISLAMABAD: Representatives of five cellular companies on Thursday appeared before a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) investigation committee and recorded their statements in a Rs 47 billion tax evasion scam. The NAB investigation committee comprised DG Operations, Director Special Operations and a senior Banking officer of NAB, an official said.

The NAB official said the investigation team had also taken over relevant record into custody from FBR’s Chief Commissioner Lagre Tax Unit. Earlier, on July 4, 2012, Chairman NAB Admiral Fasih Bokhari (Retd) had taken a suo motu notice to safeguard Rs 47 billion for the people of Pakistan and asked the Chairman FBR to appear before the NAB to explain details in this regard.

He said that earlier a high-level team of FBR comprising Member Inland Revenue, Member Admin and Chief Sales Tax had already appeared before NAB’s inquiry team and appraised it about the issue of tax waiver to these companies. The explanation offered by FBR officials was found to be satisfactory, he said.
