’Cause it’s a gypsy mela

LAHORE: A two-day gypsy mela organised by Grass-root Organisation for Human Development (GODH) kicked off at Children Library Complex on Tuesday.

This year, the theme of Gypsy Mela is “Identity is Our Right”. Therefore, a Nadra mobile unit to and a birth registration desk was set up by City District Government at the event to register the attending.
The 6th annual gypsy mela was inaugurated by the Provincial Social Welfare Minister Zakia Shahnawaz. Hameeda Waheedud Din, Minister for Women development also visited the mela and acknowledged efforts of GODH for the identification of the nomads.

On the first day, folk performers from across the country participated in the event. Krishan Lal Bheel from Cholistan, Sain Iqbal Group, Yousaf Punjabi and a number of other artists performed at the Mela.
Swings, rides and sports activities is arranged for children at the event.

The basic objective of the event is to highlight art and culture of gypsies, bringing attention towards their hardships and identity issues as well as to aware people regarding their due rights.
Legendry singer Rashman was paid rich tribute and her famous song “Lambi Judai” was sung on the occasion.

GODH also held a stakeholder conference in which gypsies shared their issues with representatives of government departments including health, education, social welfare, civil societies and local government. On the occasion, a large number of stall were set up by the gypsies.
