Call to revive film industry

In this connection, a press briefing was held on Saturday which was addressed by Secretary Culture Salim Gul Sheikh and Chairman Hunerkada Jamal Shah.Speaking on the occasion, the secretary culture underlined the need to identify the challenges confronting the film industry to put it on sound footing.

He called for interacting with the film industry itself, the media as well as with financial circles to bring back the bygone glory of the Pakistan film industry. The rate of production of films has drastically dropped and whatever is being produced offers little to attract cinemagoers, he said, adding that the films produced in 1992 were 90, while the films produced in 2006 added up to mere 44.

Salim said the film industry is presently facing the worst crisis in its history and is almost heading towards a total collapse. He said in the past the government had been helping the film industry by abolishing the entertainment tax and by declaring the film-making as Industry.Jamal Shah said the two-day moot would be of great importance with regard to giving impetus to efforts to revive the sinking film industry of the country.

He said up to 40 delegates, including actors, producers and intellectuals, were likely to participate in the conference that would conclude with certain recommendations to elevate the film industry.
