Call to make distinction between rights and obligations of women

RAJA AQEEL

ISLAMABAD: State Minister for Information Sumsam Bukhari on Tuesday said that East has given more respect and dignity to women and we have to invigorate the old values in our socio-cultural setup to mainstream womenfolk with respect.

He stated this while speaking at a seminar “women’s participation in media: international challenges, partnership and opportunities,” organised by the Information Ministry, gender developments section, here. Samsam said we have women representatives in all walks of life from firms to parliament. Islam gives women vital power and dignity, but we have to make distinction between rights and obligations of women, keeping in mind our fragile socio-cultural fibre.

No society can make progress without active participation of women, he said, adding that Pakistan People’s Party believes in equality of women and men, as no country can prosper without the participation of more than half of its total population.

The PPP government, he added, is committed to fulfil the dream of the first women prime minister of the Muslim world Benazir Bhutto. Our leader empowered women to a great extent and wanted to do more to improve their economic lot for which Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) has been launched, aimed at encompassing women living below poverty line, he added. Referring to a recent survey, the state minister said women in the country are about 53 percent of the total population.
