Call for efforts to eliminate discrimination against women

ISLAMABAD: Speakers at a seminar here on Monday called for joint efforts by the civil society and government to bring changes in the mindset of people and eliminate feudalism, which is a root cause of injustices and inhuman treatment and discrimination with women.

They appreciated the government and the parliament for approving the harassment of women at workplace bill and said that mere legislation cannot address the agonies of women unless there was proper awareness about their rights.

The seminar, arranged by Interagency Gender and Development Group (INGAD) in connection with International Women Day, aimed at highlighting the importance of legislation for the protection and promotion of women rights.

The special focus was laid on Sexual Harassment Act and the under process Domestic Violence Bill and the Acid Control and Acid Crime Prevention Bill.

Speaking as chief guest on the occasion, Justice (Retd) Majida Rizvi, appreciated the role of civil society for impressing upon the government to formulate laws and take concrete steps for the protection of 52 per cent of the population.

About National Commission on Status of Women (NCSW), she said that the commission should be given independent status with adequate powers, separate budget and constitutional protection.

Speaking on implementation of Sexual Harassment Act, Dr Fauzia Saeed and Aqsa stressed the need for creating awareness about laws among the public and sensitization of law enforcement agencies.
