Cable operators warned against airing ‘illegal’ channels

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has given a final warning to all cable TV operators across the country, asking them to immediately stop distributing TV channels that are illegal or proscribed by the authority.

No channel other than those licenced by PEMRA would be let distributed on cable TV networks, and any operator found defying the orders henceforth would be dealt seriously, said a statement issued by PEMRA. The action would pave the way for airing of PEMRA-licenced channels on distribution networks, which were hitherto being ignored, as unauthorised foreign channels were consuming most of the space. PEMRA has issued a list of ‘eligible channels’, containing 89 Pakistani channels and 26 foreign channels, registered with the authority. Cable operators, however, have the liberty to choose channels amongst the eligible list while putting in front the subscribers’ choice.

Besides, cable operators are also bound to relay national broadcaster (PTV) channels, which are mandatory under the PEMRA law.
