By-elections postponed

The Election Commission has postponed by-elections in NA-123 (Lahore) and NA-55, because of volatile law and order situation and serious threats of terrorist attacks.

PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif who was recently declared by the apex court as qualified to contest election is a candidate for the NA-123 seat. Polling in the constituency was withheld because of a controversy over his disqualification.

The NA-55 Rawalpindi seat fell vacant after PML-N’s MNA from the constituency, Haji Pervez Khan, was forced to resign because of his involvement in an examination scam.

Polling in NA-123 was scheduled to take place on June 30 and in NA-55 on July 4.

According to Secretary Election Commission Kanwar Muhammad Dilshad, the decision to postpone polls was taken on receipt of a report from the chief secretary of Punjab about threats of terrorist attacks.
