Burney seeks arrest of mighty Talpur

By: Kaswar Klasra

ISLAMABAD: Shahzeb’s departed soul must be feeling well on Sunday following a rare statement issued by Ansar Burney, country’s diehard human rights activist whose services have been acknowledges worldwide, that government should arrest the alleged murderer who belongs to Sindh’s most influential and landlord Talpur family.

“Murder of youth in broad daylight, whose only crime was to save honour of his sister, has shaken me badly. I have given two-day deadline to government to arrest the murderer,” Burney told TheNation on Sunday threatening the government of protests.

Burney, however, complained that national media was not playing its due role in getting the murderer arrest in this particular case. “National media has time and space to run big stories regarding an Indian victim of rape, however, don’t have courage to expose a murderer of 20-year-old youth Shahzeb who fell prey to armed men in a bid to save honour of his sister Wednesday last,” Ansar Burney complained over telephone. He requested the national media to run a campaign until the murderer, who allegedly belongs to influential Talpur family of Sindh, is arrested.

Shahzeb Khan, the only son of his parents, was shot dead on Wednesday last following argument with a servant of a family of landlord who is alleged to have close family relation with husband of President Asif Ali Zardari’s sister Faryal Talpur.

It all started when Shahzeb argued with servant of Nawab Siraj Talpur’s personal assistant who allegedly harassed Shahzeb’s sister last week on Wednesday. According to witnesses, both Shahzeb and Siraj’s servant got engaged in verbal fighting until Shahzeb’s father, DSP Aurangzeb, jumped in and quickly resolved the dispute, and the two men left on a good note. Keeping in mind that feud was over, Shahzab Khan stepped out of his home and made his way to market for outing after some moments with his friends.

He was not far from his home when Nawab Siraj Talpur and his friend intercepted him and allegedly fired into Shahzeb’s car, leaving him severely injured, and eventually dead.

Influenced by social media and human rights activists, police have registered FIR under section 302 against the two accused and their guard; however, it is yet to arrest them. However, insiders told this correspondent that Shahzeb’s father, a serving Deputy Superintendent of Police, had a hard time registering the case owing to political pressure coming from other end.

“I wouldn’t step back until justice is done with Shahzeb’s family, no matter how dangerous the task might be,” Burney told TheNation on Sunday.
