BUJ holds rally against killing of senior journalist

QUETTA (February 11 2008): Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ) and Quetta press club members here Sunday staged demonstration and took out rally against killing of a senior journalist and columnist Dr Chishti Mujahid.

The journalists gathered at Quetta press club and marched in procession through Sharah-e-Iqbal and Zarghoon Road to Governor House and Chief Minister Secretariat where it turned into meeting. They carried a banner and chanted slogans condemning the tragic incident and demanding arrest of assailants.

Addressing the gathering, president of the press club Shehzada Zulfiqar strongly condemned the target killing of the senior journalist.

He said: ‘journalists do not belong to any particular race or religion when they hold their pens. They represent viewpoints of all parties impartially’. He said that services of Dr Chishti Mujahid will be remembered for which he rendered for journalism.

Without naming any particular group, he said if anyone had complaint about his (Dr Chishti’s) writ ups he had to first register his complains to his organisation or journalist bodies in order to redress the complaints.

Assistant secretary PFUJ, Saleem Shahid, general secretary of the press club Raza-ur-Rehman and others also addressed the gathering and condemned the incident.

They paid warm tribute to Dr Chishti and said that journalists perform their professional duties impartially in volatile situation in the province. They urged the political parties and other groups to refrain themselves from such extreme and aggressive steps and express patience. Later, the participants of the rally returned to the press club amid chanting slogans and dispersed peacefully.
