Beware journalists
Sir: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Saturday, in an effort to placate the strong journalist community, said that his government is devising an institutional mechanism to protect journalists from violence and threats.
The journalist community should not be lured by such announcements. Providing protection to every citizen is every government’s prime responsibility. The PM’s statement in this regard should not stop journalists from reporting the corrupt activities of the government. The government has been giving perks and privileges to other guilds as well.
We have the example of the lawyers’ community in front of us. Former law minister Babar Awan distributed millions of rupees among them to win their support for the PPP-led government. The masses of Pakistan hold high expectations from the journalist community and they want them to keep reporting and presenting analyses in an objective manner.
