Bailable warrants against newsman

HYDERABAD: Judicial Magistrate-I, Hyderabad, Ms Naseem Akhtar has issued bailable warrants against daily Dawn’s correspondent for Hyderabad, M H Khan, in a case lodged against him by the Hyderabad Central Prison authorities for publishing photos of prison torture.

However, court’s bailiff accepted the personal bond of the journalist. “I am releasing you on my surety,” the bailiff told the journalist to which the latter replied that he was on pre-arrest bail, granted by the Sindh High Court, Hyderabad Circuit Bench, in a sum of Rs 50,000.

The bailiff maintained that hearing of the case was being held for the last several months but the correspondent did not turn up. The journalist replied that he was not informed by the Baldia Police Station at the time of submission of final challan of the case.

The case in question was registered against M H Khan on July 25,1996 under Sections 420, 469, 470, 471 and 505 PPC on the complaint of Deputy Superintendent of jail, Syed Afaq Hussain Rizvi under the directives of his high-ups after the correspondent’s story, supported by photographs was published in Dawn on July 24,1996, showing under-trial prisoners in bar fetters in Central Prison, Hyderabad.

The correspondent had obtained pre-arrest bail in this case on August 2,1996
